Fire Tower Restoration Project

With the tower painting nearly complete, Pat Ferrick and Peg Masters head to the staging area to transport pre-cut steps 3/4 of a mile back to the tower.
Pat Ferrick wrestles with rusty bolts to remove rotted
steps.
Two trips were made to the landing to dispose of discarded steps and ferry new ones over to the tower site. Puddles under the tower are reminders of the gusty winds and rain from Hurricane Isabel the day before.
At the end of the day - two new flights of stairs are in place!!!! Paynes Air Service from Sixth Lake flew by several times during the day, tipping their wings in acknowledgement of our restoration work.
The parking lot was filled and cars lined the Rondaxe road as a steady stream of visitors climbed to the Bald (Rondaxe) Tower on September 20th. Few of the leaves have changed as of yet. Hundreds more visitors are expected over the next several weeks. Rumor has it, a Raquette Lake couple got engaged on the summit this past week.
