"Closed for Repairs"
A temporary tower closed sign greeted scores of hikers on July 12th who pulled out their cameras never-the-less to photograph the "work in progress" accomplished by the Friends of Bald Mountain. Committee member Sandy Stripp bravely strapped herself to the cab - eased out the open window and applied the prep coat to the roof and cab exterior. Other crew members hacked away to remove rusty stair bolts and rickety security fencing. The framework for the lower steps was taken down to keep hikers from entering the cab until new landings, steps and fencing are installed to provide safe access.

Despite threatening storm clouds, volunteers Jack Ball and Hans Schmid apply the prep paint coat to the tower in the late afternoon of July 12th. The workday began at 7:30am when volunteers, assisted Forest Ranger Doug Riedman, transferred 5 loads of materials to the summit staging area using a DEC 6-wheeler over an old tote road. From the staging area, supplies need for the workday were then manually carried to the base of the Bald Mountain Tower.
Assistant DEC Ranger Mike reported more than 1300 VISITORS signed the register in the first two weeks of July!
Work Photos -
July 26, 2003
Jim Tracy, Pat Ferrick & Peg Masters completed a productive
work weekend applying the primer coat to the tower structure. Our mascot greeted climbers in between soaks in a
summit pool of water. Slowly but surely - the rusty metal was coated with the
protective primer.
